1937年，日军席卷中国北部及东南各省；1939年，中国文艺界期望全国诗人发挥爱国精神及鼓励士气，因此特地集会，拟定诗人爱国之节日。

由于屈原不仅是史上有名的爱国诗人，且其诗的成就不凡，道德品格又相当圆满，足为全国诗人的榜样。因此，他们乃议定，将每年五月五日屈原投江而死的这一天，作为“诗人节”，用以激励全国诗人，发挥爱国的精神抗战。

这就是端午节又被称为“诗人节”的由来。

事实上，除了纪念屈原之说法，民间还流传纪念其他人物的传说。

纪念屈原

纪念屈原的传说，最迟可推至魏晋南北朝之时。流传至今日，端午节与屈原的结合已密不可分。粽子、五色丝、楝叶、竞渡等习俗，皆源于纪念屈原。

《续齐谐记》记载，楚国人民感怀屈原的忠贞爱国，于是每年五月五日都以竹筒饭投入水中以祭祀他。

但后来为了避免被蛟龙所窃，人们便把楝叶塞在竹筒上，再用五色丝捆缚，因为这两物是蛟龙所惧怕的东西。

另外，关于竞渡起于屈原的说法，在很多文献中都曾提及，如《荆楚岁时记》里，杜公赡注曰：划龙舟是为了拯救屈原。

这些都是家喻户晓的故事。但事实上，除了屈原与五月五日的关系外，还有其他与端午节有关的人物传说，也在不同地区流传。

纪念曹娥

《后汉书》中记载，曹娥的父亲为巫祝，在五月五日迎波神时不幸溺死，且找不到尸骸。曹娥沿江哭泣寻找，七日后亦投江而亡。

民间端午节关于曹娥的传说非常盛行，有县志还提到赛龙舟时要塑曹娥像，《古今图书集成》引云梦县志云：

“五月五日赛龙舟……中塑忠臣、孝女曹娥，俗称娥为游江女娘，及瘟司、水神像。”

云梦是屈原的故乡，然而其地在端午节时，祭祀屈原之外，连曹娥、瘟司、水神并祭。到后来的民间传说，甚至把伍子胥与曹娥说成是“父女关系”——曹娥会在五月五日这天，驾舟拜见父君。

可见，在端午节起源的传说中，曹娥已占有一席之地，而且传说故事是会随时代的发展，而附加、演变的。

纪念伍子胥

除了楚地纪念屈原的说法外，还有其他的人物纪念传说。

《荆楚岁时记》中提到两种在五月五日竞渡的原因。第一种是为了纪念屈原；第二种是源于吴地人民在五月五日迎接钱塘江“潮神”伍子胥。

根据《史记‧伍子胥列传》和《吴郡志》的记载，伍子胥被吴王夫差赐死，尸首被投入江中，吴地人民感于他忠谏爱国，在他被投尸的江边为他立祠祭祀。后来传说衍生为——伍子胥成为“潮神”。

钱江潮，自古以来被称为“天下奇观”，至今仍为盛事。伍子胥是吴越历史名人，而民间传说常将风景名胜与当地历史传说人物联系一起。

故五月五日迎接“潮神”伍子胥，极有可能是受到当时流行端午节是为了纪念伍子胥或曹娥说法的影响，而造成附会的情形。

纪念越王勾践

《岁时广记》与《古今图书集成·端午部》都引《越地传》云：

“竞渡之事，起于越王勾践，今龙舟是也。”

越王勾践在与吴国战败后，一心想要报仇雪恨。而在吴越地区的战争中，水战占重要成败因素，因此训练水军为报仇雪恨的前提条件。

勾践为了不被吴王夫差发现，便托于嬉戏以掩人耳目。以上文献皆引《越地传》，以试图解释越地竞渡的由来。

《越地传》现已亡佚。但从《太平御览》引《越地传》中，并未发现“竞渡之事，起于越王勾践”的条文。

可见，事实究竟如何，如今已难考证。

江夏是地名，在今武汉市。原来是一个县，今被设立为武汉市江夏区。 详细资料：武汉的一个区 江夏”初为郡名，汉高祖六年（公元前201年）设。两汉皆治西陵县（今武汉市新洲区境内），亦有前汉治于安陆（今湖北省安陆市北），后汉治于西陵一说。三国时，魏、吴各置江夏郡，魏江夏郡治上昶城（今湖北省安陆市西北），吴江夏郡初治沙羡（县治在今武汉市江夏区境内），孙权自公安都鄂后，立武昌郡，旋复名江夏郡治武昌县（今鄂州市）。晋平吴后，改吴江夏郡为武昌郡，并将原魏江夏郡治迁回安陆旧城。南朝刘宋时，江夏郡定治于汝南县城（即夏口）。至隋平陈，江夏郡、武昌郡皆废，入鄂州。隋炀帝时及唐代中期，因政区通名变化，曾两度改鄂州为江夏郡，乾元元年后，江夏郡一名始废。 “江夏”自隋开皇九年起又被用作县名，当时是改侨县汝南县为江夏县。此前，今武汉市域内最早的县级行政建制为沙羡县，始设于西汉。三国吴省之，晋太康元年复置，治夏口。后省沙羡，并入沙阳。东晋末，汝南郡民流寓夏口，因侨立汝南县。自隋改汝南县为江夏县后，“江夏”县名沿袭不变，直至清朝灭亡。1912年为纪念辛亥革命改江夏县为武昌县，寓“因武而昌”之意。
