作为中国历史上，第一部以白话文写成的长篇小说，《水浒传》对后世的影响是巨大的。 《水浒传》被改编成多种曲艺形式。另一篇古典名著《红楼梦》中就提到了“鲁智深大闹五台山”的曲目。评书、苏州评弹和山东快书都有很多经典节目是取材自《水浒传》。 与《三国演义》相比，《水浒传》的长处不在于政治和战争场面的描写，而在于主要人物的刻画和市民生活的描写。其中梁山主要人物宋江、林冲、武松、鲁智深、李逵等，人物个性鲜明，角色语言各有特色。 在缺乏知识以及大众娱乐活动的年代，《水浒传》与《三国演义》等通俗小说往往就通过民间艺人，以戏曲曲艺的形式，成为了普通民众仅有的文化活动。其中虚构的人物或者虚构的故事变成为了老百姓眼中的史实。其中很多故事，如“鲁智深倒拔垂杨柳”，“武松打虎”等，历来为男女老少所津津乐道。书中字里行间流露出来的各种道德观如：轻生死重义气，敢作敢为，劫富济贫乃至“忠君反贪”等理念，便在相当程度上影响了大众评判是非善恶的标准。而这些标准是否真正值得宣扬，又引起各界众说纷纭。 近代民间亦有流传一句话：“少不读水浒，老不读三国”，意年轻人不该读《水浒传》，否则容易向往打打杀杀的生活，盲目崇尚武力与江湖义气，过分反叛，脱离现实；而老年人不应该读《三国演义》，因为其中人物善于用计使诈，处心积虑、钩心斗角，作为应该“知天命”的老人应该安度晚年，不能整天想着算计别人，对自己身心无益。 从历史角度看，对于《水浒》的争论焦点则集中在主要人物宋江所表现出的“忠君报国”的思想上。反面观点一般认为宋江的思想有其局限性，梁山好汉受到招安后又为朝廷去征讨各地山贼，下场悲惨，是出历史悲剧。正面观点一般认为宋江相对于其他草莽英雄思想进步，对当时社会可以起到积极作用。参考资料：wiki
