Running heads show the current text of a certain paragraph, like a heading. For example, you can have the contents of the current Heading 1 display on each page. Each new instance of a Heading 1 changes the running head text starting at that point until another Heading 1 appears in the document. This very book uses running heads in the header: chapters on the left pages, and Heading 1 titles on the right pages.Set up outline numbering so that the paragraph style you want to use for the running head is selected as Level 1 in the Outline Numbering window.See Outline Numbering, for Chapter, Figure, and Cross-Reference Numbering on page 314.Click in the header or footer where you want to insert the numbering.Press Ctrl+F2 to bring up the Fields window. On the Document tab, in the Type list, select Chapter. In the Format list, select Chapter name.Click Insert. If you're using more than one set of headers and footers in the document, copy and paste the running head to all pertinent headers or footers.
