20 世纪70 年代末童坦君教授揭示生物体液中存在抑癌活性物质,此物质对癌细胞有具有杀伤作用,但不抑制自身骨髓细胞。20 世纪90 年代初,他在肽类生长因子信号传递方面提出了生长因子干预原癌基因转录因子及DNA 甲基化的设想,所领导的研究组率先揭示表皮生长因子(EGF)具有降低某些原癌基因甲基化,促进染色质蛋白激酶活性,使某些原癌基因特异结合蛋白增多等作用,并对影响途径进行了系统的研究。童坦君教授领导的研究组不仅揭示p16 基因在细胞衰老中的重要作用,并为延缓衰老研究提供了基因模型,为通过基因重组技术调节人类某些细胞的寿命提供了新依据。他们还在寻找衰老相关新基因、深入研究细胞其他重要衰老相关基因、信号传递通路方面做了大量系统的、创新性工作,克隆出延缓衰老的RDL 与加速衰老的TOM1 两种细胞衰老相关新基因,发现在细胞衰老相关基因之间存在着相互作用,p21 可促进p16 表达,这一促进作用是通过转录因子Sp1
