We may spend a lot of time blaming ourselves for our negative qualities, thinking that self criticism is the key to improving our performance. However, a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. How can we believe that others could like us if we believe our inner being is flawed(有缺陷)? If someone seems to dislike you, the reason for that dislike might have little or nothing to do with you. The person who doesn't like you might be fearful, or shallow, or busy or shy. Perhaps you and that person are simply a mismatch for each other at this particular time. Don't take yourself out of the game by deciding that your flaws are bigger than your good qualities. In fact, some o f the very qualities you consider to be flaws may be irresistible to someone else. For all the factors that might cause one person to reject you, there are at least as many factors that will work in your favor with someone else. You might be thirty pounds over your ideal weight, but you may have a wonderful laugh and a real enthusiasm for life. There are many people who don’t mind your extra pounds. You may drive a shabby car, but you might be a great dancer and a loyal friend. There are people out there looking for loyalty, or fun, or sweetness, or wisdom, and the package it comes in is not important. If you are worried that you are not beautiful enough to attract friends, keep in mind that not everyone is looking for physical beauty in their friends. You can decide to feel inferior(自卑) because you don't have much money and you don't drive a nice car. You can believe that this is the reason that you don't have many friends in your life. On the other hand, if you are very wealthy you may be suspicious that everyone is after your money and that nobody really likes yo u as a person. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any. 36. According to the author ___________ plays an important role in making friends. A. admitting your shortcomings B. self criticism C. modesty D. confidence 【答案】D 【解析】推理判断题。根据a constant focus on our supposed shortcomings can stop our efforts to make friends with other people. D。 37. What do you think the author is most likely to suggest if he continues to write? A. How to find your good qualities. B. How to make friends. C. How to make self criticism. D. How to lose weight. The point is that you can focus on just about anything and believe it's the reason you do not have friends and cannot make any. Sunny countries are often poor. A shame, then, that solar power is still quite expensive. Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, however, invented a novel way to get round this. In return for a deposit of around $10 it is supplying poor Kenyan families with a solar cell able to generate watts of electricity, a battery that can deliver a three amp(安培) current to store this electricity, and a lamp whose bulb is a light-emitting diode(二极管). The firm thinks that this system, once the battery is fully charged, is enough to light two small rooms and to power a mobile-phone charger for seven hours. Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again. The trick is that, to be able to use the electricity, the system's keeper must buy a scratch card—for as little as a dollar—on which is printed a reference number. The keeper sends this reference, plus the serial number of the household solar unit, by SMS to Eight19. The company's server will respond automatically with an access code to the unit. Users may consider that they are paying an hourly rate for their electricity. In fact, they are paying off the cost of the unit. After buying around $80 worth of scratch cards—which Eight19 expects would take the average family around 18 m onths—the user will own it. He will then have the option of continuing to use it for nothing, or of trading it in for a bigger one, perhaps driven by a 10-watt solar cell. In that case, he would go then through the same process again, paying off the additional cost of the upgraded kit at a slightly higher rate. Users would therefore increase their electricity supply steadily and affordably. According to Eight19's figures, this looks like a good deal for customers. The firm believes the average energy-starved Kenyan spends around $10 a month on oil—enough to fuel a couple of smoky lamps—plus $2 on charging his mobile phone in the market-place. Regular users of one of Eight19's basic solar units will spend around half tha t, before owning it completely. Meanwhile, as the cost of solar tech nology falls, it should get even cheaper. 41. The underlined word “get round” in the first paragraph can be replaced by _______ . A. make use of B. come up with C. look into D. deal with 【答案】D 【解析】词义猜测题。make use of利用; come up with想出; look into调查; deal with处理。根据solar power is still quite expensive及Eight19, a British company by Cambridge University, has, however, invented a novel way to因为太阳能仍然很贵,所以Eight19发明了一个新的 方法 来解决这个问题,故选D。 42. What should the user do when the electricity in the battery is used up? A. Buy a scratch card. B. Recharge it outside. C. Buy another solar cell. D. Return it to the company. Then, next day, it can be put outside and charged back up again. A。 43. How much would users pay for the cell and scratch cards before they own a solar cell? A. Around $10. B. Around $80. C. Around $90. D. Around $180. After buying around $80 worth of scratch cards—which Eight19 expects would take the average family around 18 months—the user will own it. 和In return for a deposit of around $10 it is supplying poor Kenyan families with a solar cell able to generate watts of electricity可知在你拥有这些之前,你要花费90元。故选C。 44. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that __________ __. A. Kenyan families would find it difficult to afford the solar cell B. using the solar cell would help Kenyan families save money C. few Kenyan families use mobile phones for lack of electricity D. the company will make a great profit from selling solar cells 【答案】B 【解析】推理判断题。 The firm believes the average energy-starved Kenyan spends around $10 a month on oil—enough to fuel a couple of smoky lamps—plus $2 on charging his mobile phone in the market-place. Regular users of one of Eight19's basic solar units will spend around half that, before owning it completely. Meanwhile, as the cost of solar technology falls, it should get even cheaper. B。 45. What might be the most suitable title for the passage? A. Solar Energy: Starting from Scratch. B. Eight19: a creative British Company. C. Kenyan Families: Using Solar Energy for Free. D. Poor Countries: Beginning to Use Solar Ene rgy 【答案】A 【解析】标题归纳题。 While Andrew was getting ready for work one Friday morning, he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise. All day Andrew felt nervous and anxious as he thought about the upcoming showdown. What if Mr Larchmont refused to grant his request? Andrew had worked so hard in the last 18 months and landed some great accounts for Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. Of course, he deserved a wage increase. The thought of walking into Larchmont’s office left Andrew weak in the knees. Late in the afternoon he was finally courageous enough to approach his superior. To his delight and surprise, the ever-frugal(一向节俭的)Harvey Larchmont agreed to give Andrew a raise! Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits—to a beautiful table set with their best china, and candles lit. His wife, Tina, had prepared a delicate meal including his favorite dishes. Immediately he figured someone from the office had tipped her off! Next to his plate Andrew found a beautiful lettered note. It was from his wife. It read: “Congratulations, my love! I knew you’d get the raise! I prepared this dinner to show just how much I love you. I am so proud of your accomplishments!” He read it and stopped to reflect on how sensitive and caring Tina was. After dinner, Andrew was on his way to the kitchen to get dessert when he observed that a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor. He bent forward to pick it up. It read: “Don’t worry about not getting the raise! You do deserve one! You are a wonderful provider and I prepared this dinner to show you just how much I love you even though you did not get the increase.” Suddenly tears swelled in Andrew’s eyes. Total acceptance! Tina’s support for him was not conditional upon his success at work. The fear of rejection is often softened and we can undergo almost any setback or rejection when we know someone loves us regardless of our success or failure. 31. What was Andrew’s plan that Friday? A. To request a wage increase from his boss. B. To get a job with the Braer and Hopkins Advertising Agency. C. To celebrate his success with his wife at home. D. To ask his boss to come for dinner. 由“he announced to his wife that he had finally decided to ask his boss for a salary raise.” A。 32. On his way back home, Andrew _________. A. felt weak in the knees B. was punished by the traffic policeman C. was too anxious to share the news D. couldn’t wait to enjoy a meal 【答案】C 【解析】细节理解题。由“Andrew arrived home that evening—despite breaking all city and state speed limits”中“尽管超出了城市及国家的最高车速”可 知Andrew车开的很快,说明他很急切地回家去分享这个好消息。故选C。 33. Which of the following statements about the story is FALSE? A. Andrew was afraid that his request would lead to disaster. B. Andrew had worked very hard and done his part for the company. C. Andrew’s boss agreed to his request. D. One of Andrew’s colleagues had told his wife the good news. 第五段“a second card had slipped out of Tina’s pocket onto the floor.” D。 34. Why did Tina prepare a grand dinner for Andrew that day? A. She was confident of his getting a pay raise. B. She meant to show her support whatever the result would be. C. She believed t hat her husband was the best in his company. D. Passage 1

In 1939 two brothers, Mac and Dick McDonald, started a drive-in restaurant in San Bernadino, California. They carefully chose a busy corner for their location. They had run their own businesses for years, first a theater, then a barbecue(烤肉)restaurant, and then another drive-in. But in their new operation, they offered a new, shortened menu: French fries, hamburgers, and sodas. To this small selection they added one new concept: quick service, no waiters or waitresses, and no tips.

Their hamburgers sold for fifteen cents. Cheese was another four cents. Their French fries and hamburgers had a remarkable uniformity, for the brothers had developed a strict routine for the preparation of their food, and they insisted on their cooks' sticking to their routine. Their new drive-in became incredibly popular, particularly for lunch. People drove up by the hundreds during the busy noontime. The self-service restaurant was so popular that the brothers had allowed ten copies of their restaurant to be opened. They were content with this modest success untilthey met Ray Kroc.

Kroc was a salesman who met the McDonald brothers in 1954, when he was selling milk shake-mixing machines. He quickly saw the unique appeal of the brothers' fast-food restaurants and bought the right to franchise(特许经营)other copies of their restaurants. Passage2

You're busy filling out the application form for a position you really need; let's assume you once actually completed a couple of years of college work or even that you completed your degree. Isn't it tempting to lie just a little, to claim on the form that your diploma represents a Harvard degree? Or that you finished an extra couple of years back at State University?

More and more people are turning to utter deception like this to land their job or to move ahead in their careers, for personnel officers, like most Americans, value degrees from famous schools. A job applicant may have a good education anyway, but he or she assumes that chances of being hired are better with a diploma from a well-known university. Registrars at most well-known colleges say theydeal with deceitful claims like these at the rate of aboutone per week.

Personnel officers do check up on degrees listed on application forms, then. If it turns out that an applicants lying, most colleges are reluctant to accuse the applicant directly. One Ivy League school calls them impostors(); another refers to them asspecial cases. One well-known West Coast school, in perhaps the most delicate phrase of all, says that these claims are made byno such people.

To avoid outright(彻底的')lies, some job-seekers claim that they attended or were associated with a college or university. After carefully checking, a personnel officer may discover that attending means being dismissed after one semester. It may be that being associated with a college means that the job-seeker visited his younger brother for a football weekend. One school that keeps records of false claims says that the practice dates back at least to the turn of the century-that's when they began keeping records, anyhow.

If you don't want to lie or even stretch the truth, there are companies that will sell you a phony(假的)diploma. One company, with offices in New York and on the West Coast, will put your name on a diploma from any number of non-existent colleges. The price begins at around twenty dollars for a diploma from Smoot State prices increase rapidly for a degree from the University of Purdue. As there is no Smoot State and the real school in Indiana properly called Purdue University, the prices seem rather high for one sheet of paper.

6. The main idea of this passage is that.

A)employers are checking more closely on applicants now

B)lying about college degrees has become a widespread problem

C)college degrees can now be purchased easily

D)employers are no longer interested in college degrees

7. According to the passage, special cases refer to cases where.

A)students attend a school only part-time

B)students never attended a school they listed on their application

C)students purchase false degrees from commercial films

D)students attended a famous school

8. We can infer from the passage that.

A)performance is a better judge of ability that a college degree

B)experience is the best teacher

C)past work histories influence personnel officers more than degrees do

D)a degree from a famous school enables an applicant to gain advantage over others in job petition

9. This passage implies that.

A)buying a false degree is not moral

B)personnel officers only consider applicants from famousschools

C)most people lie on applications because they were dismissed from school

D)society should be greatly responsible for lying on applications

10. As used in the first line of the second paragraph, the word utter means.

A)address

B)thorough

C)ultimate

D)decisive

1) Which is the best title of the passage?

2) Which of the following is this passage about?

3) In this passage the writer tries to tell us that____.

4) The passage tells us that_____.

5) This passage mainly talks about____.

Which is the best title of the passage?

The writer thinks________.

The writer wants to tell us__________.

The main idea of the passage is________.

1) How many times did the tiger come into the village?

2) From the second paragraph we know_____.

Which of the following is (NOT) true?

Which of the following descriptions about… is right?

What does the word “…” mean in paragraph 3?

What does the sentence “…” really mean?

In the last paragraph, “…” means___.

What does the underlined word mean?

前缀或后缀-ful(形容词后缀), -less(无,没有,构成形容词), -ly(副词后缀), un-(不,非,未), dis-(相反,否定)re-(重新)

appear disappear, agree disagree, tie untie, happy unhappy, careful, careless, hope hopeless, comfortable uncomfortable

Australians put their shirt “tails” on the clothes line after washing, because they usually put them into their trousers.

Microscope is an instrument(工具)that makes small near objects seems means_______.

If youwant to find something to do for Saturday afternoon ,which telephone number will you call ?

Most seaweed is red and brown in color.

Invariably the background was the same.

You’ll be punished if you desert rubbish everywhere.

Insects would make it impossible for us to live in the world; they would devour all our crops and kill our flocks and herds.

Wood and skins have easily rotted away, but stone doesn’t decay.

His name was Napoleon Bonaparte, and he finally became Emperor of France.

Modern alpinists try to climb mountains by a route which will give them good sport.

It is animals and plants that lived in or near water whose remains are most likely to be preserved, for one of the necessary conditions of preservation is quick burial, and it is only in the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes, where mud and silt(淤泥) have been continuously deposited(沉积), that bodies and the like can be rapidly covered over and preserved.

It is animals and plants that lived in or near water,它的后面带了一个原因状语从句:for one of the necessary conditions of preservation is quick burial,而句子中whose所引导的句子是一个定语从句,隔位修饰前面的animals and plants 而不是 water;第 2 个并列句子的主句为:it is only in the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes that bodies and the like can be rapidly covered over and preserved,而 where 所引导的句子为定语从句,对前面的the seas and rivers, and sometimes lakes 进行修饰。

These days, it is differences in national regulations, far more than tariffs that put sand in the wheels of trade between rich countries.

相关词语分为两大类:其一是关键词,即名词、动词、数词和形容词等实词,根据这些词语就能够看出句子或文章的主要内容;其二是信息词,即情态动词(may, must, can, have to等),副词(yet, however, therefore, otherwise, carefully, seriously 等)、连词(but, while, though, if 等)等虚词和短语(as if / though, on the contrary, by contrast, even if / though, in spite of 等),根据这些词语就能够推断出文章中人物的精神状态或作者的目的、意图、观点、立场、态度及文章的逻辑关系。

It’s time for class = It’s time to have class= It’s time that we have class.

Not all the students like sports = Not every student likes sports.

When he heard the cry for help ,he ran out immediately. = Hearing the cry for help , he dashed out. = On hearing the cry for help ,he ran out at once.

如2000 年高考试题阅读理解的第三篇:“Decision - think - ing is not unlike poker ──it often matters not only what you think ,but also what others you think and what you think they think you think.”

①摆事实讲道理后归结论点;

②开门见山,提出中心论点;

③针对生活中存在的现象,提出论题,通过分析论述,归结出中心论点;

④叙述作者的一段经历湖,归结出中心论点;

①事实论据(举例后要 总结 ,概述论据要紧扣论点);

⑶次序安排(照应论点);

⑷判断论据能否证明论点;

① 论点是怎样提出的;

②论点是怎样被证明的(用了哪些道理和事实,是否有正反两面的分析说理);

(Subject Matter)

(1) What is the main idea (subject) of this passage ?

(2) What does this passage mainly (primarily)concerned ?

(3) The main theme of this passage is ___________.

(4) The main point of the passage is__________.

(5) Which of the following is the best title for the passage ?

(6) The title that best expresses the theme of the passage is ___________.

(7) On which of the following subject would the passage most likely be found in a textbook ?

(8) The purpose of the writer in writing this passage _________.

(9) Which of the following best describes the passage as a whole ?

Example 1:

Oceanography has been defined as "The application of all sciences to the study of the sea "

Before the nineteenth century ,scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between .Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings ,but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work .

For most people the sea was remote , and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others , who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it ,let alone to what lay beneath the surface ,The first time that the question "What is at the bottom of oceans "? had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers had to know the depth profile( 轮廓)of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured.

It was to Maury of US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853 , for information on this matter. In the 1840s,Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings(试探)were taken investigate the depths of the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.

The cable was laid , but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.

Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872 Thomson led a scientific expedition, which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples form the sea. Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895 .

This passage is mainly about_____________.

A) the beginnings of oceanography

B) the laying of the first undersea cable

In 1858, a French engineer, Aime Thome de Gamond, arrived in England with a plan for a twenty-one-mile tunnel under the English Channel. He said that it would be possible to build a platform in the centre of the Channel. This platform would serve as a port and a railway station. The tunnel would be well-ventilated if tall chimneys were built above sea level. In 1860, a better plan was put forward by an Englishman, William Low. He suggested that a double railway-tunnel should be built. This would solve the problem of ventilation, for if a train entered this tunnel, it would draw in fresh air behind it. Forty-two years later a tunnel was actually begun. If, at the time, the British had not feared invasion, it would have been completed. The world had to wait almost another 100 years for the Channel Tunnel. It was officially opened on March 7,1994, finally connecting Britain to the European continent.

Firemen had been fighting the forest for nearly three weeks before they could get it under control. A short time before, great trees had covered the countryside for miles around. Now, smoke still rose up from the warm ground over the desolate hills. Winter was coming on and the hills threatened the surrounding villages with destruction, for heavy rain would not only wash away the soil but would cause serious floods as well. When the fire had at last been put out, the forest authorities ordered several tons of a special type of grass-seed which would grow quickly. The seed was sprayed over the ground in huge quantities by aeroplanes. The planes had been planting seed for nearly a month when it began to rain. By then, however, in many places the grass had already taken root. In place of the great trees which had been growing there for centuries patches of green had begun to appear in the blackened soil.

You are special A well-know speaker started on his seminar(研讨会) by holding up a $20 bill in the room of 200. He asked, who would like this $20 bill. Hands started going up. He said, "I'm going to give this $20 to one of you, but first, let me do this." He proceeded to crumple(弄皱) the $20 note up. He then asked, "who still wants it?" Still the hands were up in the air. "Well," he replied, "what if I do this?" He dropped it on the ground, and started to ground into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now, crumpled and dirty. "Now, who still wants it?" Still the hands went into the air. "My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson no matter what I did to the money, you still want it. Because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20." Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make, and circumstances that come away. We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what happened, or what will happen, you will never lose your value. Dirty or clean, crumpled or finally creased, you are still priceless to those who love you. The worst of your lives comes not in what we do, or who we know, but by who we are. You are special. Don't ever forget it. Love your mother Let us take a moment of the time just to pay tribute and show appreciation to the person called MOM though some may not say it openly to their mother. There's no substitute for her. Cherish every single moment. Though at times she may not be the best of friends, she may not agree to our thoughts, she is still your mother! Your mother will be there for you, to listen to your woes your brags your frustrations, etc. Ask yourself "Have you put aside enough time for her, to listen to her 'blues' of working in the kitchen, her tiredness?" Be tactful, loving and still show her due respect, though you may have a different view from hers. Once gone, only fond memories of the past and also regrets will be left. Do not take for granted the things closest to your heart. Love her more than you love yourself. Life is meaningless without her. Mum and growing days Those Teenage Years When you were 11 years old, she took you and your friends to the different movies. You thanked her by asking to sit in a row. When you were 12 years old, she warned you not to watch certain TV shows. You thanked her by waiting until she left the house. When you were 13, she suggested a haircut that was becoming. You thanked her by telling her she had no taste. When you were 14, she paid for a month away at summer camp. You thanked her by forgetting to write a single letter. When you were 15, she came home from work, looking for a hug. You thanked her by having your bedroom door locked. When you were 16, she taught you how to drive her car. You thanked her by taking it every chance you could. When you were 17, she was expecting an important call. You thanked her by being on the phone all night. When you were 18, she cried at your high school graduation. You thanked her by staying out partying until dawn. When you were 19, she paid for your college tuition, drove you to campus, carried your bags. You thanked her by saying good-bye outside the dorm so you wouldn't be embarrassed in front of your friends. When you were 20, she asked whether you were seeing anyone. You thanked her by saying, "It's none of your business."

The expensive shops in a famous arcade near Piccadilly were just opening. At this time of the morning, the arcade was almost empty. Mr Taylor, the owner of a jewellery shop was admiring a new window display. Two of his assistants had been working busily since 8 o'clock and had only just finished. Diamond necklaces and rings had been beautifully arranged on a background of black velvet. After gazing at the display for several minutes, Mr Taylor went back into his shop.

The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights on and its horn blaring, roared down the arcade. It came to a stop outside the jeweler's. One man stayed at the wheel while two others with black stockings over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars. While this was going on, Mr Taylor was upstairs. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window. Chairs and tables went flying into the arcade. One of the thieves was struck by a heavy statue, but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain. The raid was all over in three minutes, for the men scrambled back into the car and it moved off at a fantastic speed. Just as it was leaving, Mr Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases, but it was impossible to stop the thieves. They had got away with thousands of pounds worth of diamonds.

Yesterday afternoon Frank Hawkins was telling me about his experiences as a young man. Before he retired, Frank was the head of a very large business company, but as a boy he used to work in a small shop. It was his job to repair bicycles and at that time he used to work fourteen hours a day. He saved money for years and in 1958 he bought a small workshop of his own. In his twenties Frank used to make spare parts for aeroplanes. At that time he had two helpers. In a few years the small workshop had become a large factory which employed seven hundred and twenty-eight people. Frank smiled when he remembered his hard early years and the long road to success. He was still smiling when the door opened and his wife came in. She wanted him to repair their grandson's bicycle!

Nearly a week passed before the girl was able to explain what had happened to her. One afternoon she set out from the coast in a small boat and was caught in a storm. Towards evening, the boat struck a rock and the girl jumped into the sea. Then she swam to the shore after spending the whole night in the water. During that time she covered a distance of eight miles. Early next morning, she saw a light ahead. She knew she was near the shore because the light was high up on the cliffs. On arriving at the shore, the girl struggled up the cliff towards the light she had seen. That was all she remembered. When she woke up a day later, she found herself in hospital.
