We all need to communicate in our daily life or in diplomacy. However, because of the difference of life habit or custom and the taboo of different culture, we must learn to use Euphemism to avoid embarrassment or unhappiness. Therefore, through linguistic facet, this paper tries to research into communicative function of English Euphemism in certain language condition by special examples. Only when can we know how to make use of Euphemism in different background and environment, we can use the proper Euphemism to minimize hurt to people and to achieve the purpose of effective communicative Euphemism reflects all kinds of social mentality and social communicative function. Euphemism is also widely used in every field, so it is good for us to study English and do effective multi-cultural intercommunication. 摘 要：作为一种特殊的语言和语意现象，委婉语在英语中使用的十分广泛，本文通过总结归纳的方法分析了几种常见的委婉语类型及其使用。� 关键词：委婉语；类型；使用 英语中的euphemism （委婉语）一词源自希腊语。词头“eu -”的意思是“good ,well”,词干“pheme”的意思是“speech”,整个字面意义是“word of good omen”(吉言) 或(好的说法) 。一般来说，委婉语就是使用语气温和、迁回含蓄、文雅动听、令人愉快的表达方式代替粗俗生硬、直露刺耳或不能登大雅之堂乃至损害双方关系的语言。英语委婉语的产生有着其特定的文化背景，并反映了英语国家的社会心理状、社会价值观和相应的文化传统。委婉语在英语中的使用十分广泛， 常见的委婉语可分为如下几类:� 一、与不幸事件相关的委婉语� 对人类来说最不幸的莫过于死亡了，所以人们最忌讳的应该“死亡” 。所以与死亡相关委婉语非常多，有的委婉语与宗教有关，如： go to the next world ( 到另外一个世界去) ,to be at rest(休息，安息)，to join the immortals(加入不朽者之列)，to answer the final summons (最后一次应招)，to join the Great majority(跻身于多数之列) ，depart from this world for ever(撒手人寰 ,离开今世)，to return to earth(归之尘土) ；还有些与宗教无关，如：kick the bucket (蹬腿 ,翘辫子)，jump the last hurdle (跳过最后的栅栏)， to lay down one’s life (马革裹尸 ,为国捐躯) ，to shoot one’s last shot (射出最后一发子弹)，the last voyage (最后一次航行)，to pay one’s debt to society(向社会偿还债务)，have one foot in the grave （行将入土) ，to call curtain (谢幕) 等。这些委婉语的使用 ,也许可以减少人们的痛苦 ,以寄托人们的哀思 。� 疾病与残疾常常给人们带来极大的痛苦，所以在不得已提及这些时，人们也常常使用委婉语以避免引起自己和他人的不快。如：以 social disease (社会性疾病) 来代替venereal disease (性病)；以 preventable disease (可以预防性的疾病) 来代替 syphilis(梅毒) 或 aids (艾滋病)； 以 a growth (赘生物) 来代替 cancer (癌症)；以 heart condition (心脏状况有问题) 来代替 heart attack (心脏病)；用 physically handicapped 或 physically inconvenienced(生理上有障碍的)来代替 the crippled (残疾人)；以 hard - of - hearing (听觉有困难的) 或 defective hearing ( 听力有缺陷) 来代替 deaf (耳聋的)；以 visually retarded (视力有障碍)代替 blind (失明的)；以 mental deficiency (智力缺陷)代替 retarded (智力低下的，弱智的)。� 从某种程度上说，贫困也是一件为人带来痛苦和不幸的事 。涉及到贫困的话题常常给经济状况窘迫,生活贫苦的人带来一定的伤害，所以人们也常用委婉语指代与贫困相关的词汇，如：将poor people（穷人）委婉地称之为underprivileged people (享受权益比大多数人少的人)、the less fortunate（低收入人）、low - income people（财产不多的人）；把拖儿带女的寡妇 (widow) 称之为“依靠救济抚养子女的母亲”(a welfare mother)；把债台高筑的人 (a man in debt)说成“积蓄为负值的人”；把贫民窟 ( slum) 说成“低于标准的住宅”( substandard housing)；把贫困地区 (poverty- stricken areas) 说成“享受权益较少的地区”(underprivileged areas) ,等等。� 二、与隐私相关的委婉语。� 在英语中涉及婚姻和性的词语都属于个人隐私，一般常使用委婉语代替。如：把 sexual relations without marriage (非法同居)称为trial marriage ,free love (试婚)； 把 adultery(通奸) 称为 be intimate with sb.
