参加Tmxmall第二季高校行讲座的时候，提到了相关话题。左侧是机器翻译，完全自动化，机器是翻译的主体。右侧是机辅工具，机器辅助译者完成翻译，人是翻译的主体。比如图上贴出的在线CAT工具YiCAT，smartcat。和本地的工具如trados和memoq等。
二者有很大的不同容。 机器翻译（Machine Translation）是指计算机把一种语言翻译成另一种语言的技术。在这个过程中，计算机将人类自然语言翻译的法则转变成计算机的运算法则，使得计算机能分局运算法则将输入的源语言翻译成目标语言。谷歌翻译、必应翻译、Systran、百度翻译和有道翻译等是此类技术的代表。目前，众多国外语言服务企业（如SDL、Lionbridge、Tmxmall、小牛翻译等）采用自然语言处理技术，充分发挥机器翻译和人工智能的优势，提供精准、快速、可视和定制的自动翻译服务。 计算机辅助翻译（Computer Aided/Assisted Translation， CAT）相比机器翻译来说是个较新的概念，学者对这一概念有着不同的理解。归结起来，大致可划分为狭义和广义两大类。 狭义的计算机辅助翻译技术通常是指利用翻译记忆的匹配技术提高翻译效率的翻译技术。它利用计算机模拟人脑记忆功能的机制，把翻译过程中简单、重复性的记忆活动交给计算机来做，将译者从机械性地工作中解放出来，全力关注翻译活动本身。翻译记忆地工作原理是：用户利用已有地原文和译文，建立起一个或多个翻译记忆数据库（简称“记忆库”）。在翻译过程中，系统自动搜索记忆库中相同或相似地翻译资源（如句子、段落），从而给出参考译文，使用户避免无谓地重复劳动，只需专注于翻译新内容。与此同时，记忆库在后台不断学习和自动储存新译文，变得越来越“聪明”，效率越来越高。翻译记忆技术实际起了辅助翻译的作用，这就是“计算机辅助翻译”。翻译记忆数据库多用于计算机辅助翻译工具、文字编辑程序、专用术语管理系统、多语辞典、机器翻译等系统, trados、memoQ、YiCAT等均属于计算机辅助翻译工具技术范畴。 广义的计算机辅助翻译范畴则可指出在翻译过程中应用到的多种技术，与ISO 17100中的概念范畴较为接近。ISO 17100：2015（E）认为翻译技术涵盖一系列从业者用于辅助翻译、修订、校对的工具。翻译技术包括内容管理系统、写作技术、桌面排版、文字处理、翻译管理系统、翻译记忆工具和计算机辅助翻译、质量保证工具、修订工具、本地化工具、机器翻译、术语管理系统、项目管理软件、语音-文本识别以及其他现存的和未来将要出现的多种翻译技术。
