Cuadernos de Estudios Empresariales15 (2005): 107-126.摘要 (概要)Marks & Spencer PLC, one of the largest retail companies in the UK, went through a difficult period in 2001. Drastic measures were taken to turn the company around. This paper attempts to put the problems of the company within the context of its industry. The methodology used for the study is based on Multidimensional Scaling, a multivariate technique that serves to represent the main features of the data, and brings its most salient aspects to the fore. It was found that Marks & Spencer PLC had been loosing ground with respect to other companies in the same industry. Management action appears to have been related to a loss of confidence on the part of the financial markets. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]he Relationship Between Corporate Social Responsibility and Profitability: The Case of Royal Dutch Shell PlcEkatah, Innocent; Samy, Martin; Bampton, Roberta; Halabi, Abdel. Corporate Reputation Review14. 4 (Winter 2011): 249-261.摘要 (概要)The field of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has grown exponentially in the last decade. Nevertheless, there remains a protracted debate about the legitimacy and value of corporate responses to CSR concerns. This study explored whether CSR is linked to profitability. This study bases its measurement of CSR on content analysis of the annual reports of Royal Dutch Shell Plc. This research used a case study approach and analysed data from several key performance indicators reported in Royal Dutch Shell Plc's sustainability report and annual account over a 5-year period; 2001-2005. Results indicate that socially responsible corporate performance can be associated with profitability. Although this study did not explore the direction of the causal connections, nevertheless, the findings indicate that CSR is positively related to better financial performance (profitability) and this relationship is statistically significant. The Royal Dutch Shell Plc is chosen as it is a global energy and petrochemical company, operating in more than 145 countries and employing approximately 119,000 people (Shell, 2005). Royal Dutch Shell is one of the biggest in the oil sector and also listed as the third top company in the world. As Shell is a well-known international corporation, the perceptions of its CSR are an important indicator for not only the public at large, but also senior management of the corporation. Literature review has revealed that this kind of CSR studies involving Shell Plc is unique. This original contribution to case study analysis highlights the point that every company has to be looked at separate angles. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]To PLC or not to PLC?Abbott, Hilary. Balance Sheet5. 4 (Winter 1996): 14-17.摘要 (概要)The enormous wave of restructuring that has recently engulfed UK building societies has changed the sector dramatically. Since 1994 there has been a succession of high profile mergers and acquisitions, and societies have been deciding whether or not to abandon their mutual status and become public limited companies (PLC). This vast shake-up is part of the fundamental restructuring of the whole retail financial services industry as the traditional barriers between single product providers like building societies and insurance companies break down and large retail financial supermarkets emerge at one end of the spectrum and niche players at the other. Probably the most significant change in the sector, according to a report by accountants KPMG, is the creation of a super league of three mortgage lenders - Abbey National, Lloyds TSB and Halifax - which between them control more than 40% of both the savings and mortgage market.
